How to Apply for a Marriage License

Due to COVID restrictions, the Court is requiring that applicants set an appointment to obtain a marriage license. Please call the Court at 419-282-4325 or 419-282-4332 to schedule your appointment. The Court sets appointments for marriage licenses between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except on county holidays.

You can start the application process for a marriage online, by clicking the link at the bottom of this page. If you start the application process online, you must still call the Court and set an appointment to come to the Court, with any applicable documents, to finish the application process.

Cost of the license is $60 (cash only). Checks and credit cards are not accepted.

At least one of the applicants must be a resident of Ashland County and the marriage must be performed in the State of Ohio. If both applicants are from out of state but wish to be married in Ashland County, they must obtain their license in Ashland County.

If either applicant is under 18 years of age, contact the Court for further information.

You will need to bring the following documents with you to your appointment:

  1. A valid photo identification for each applicant.
  2. A file stamped copy of any final order or decree granting a divorce or dissolution to either applicant for all previous divorces, if either applicant was previously married and divorced.
  3. If either applicant was not given his or her father’s last name at birth, that applicant must bring a copy of his or her birth certificate.
  4. If either applicant is not an United States citizen, that applicant must bring his or her passport to the appointment.
  5. If you were previously married and your previous spouse is deceased, please bring a copy of your previous spouse's death certificate to your appointment.

The license may be used the same day it is issued. It must be used within 60 days. The day of issue is day 1 of the 60 days.

No blood test is required.
